22 October, 6.01pm pdt BeOS Agenda Performance Delays SGI Machines
BE DOPE NEWS (BDN) Just one day after Andy Grove's BeOS demo at Agenda99 where the BeOS was "looking quite smooth when compared to the SGI system," SGI announced it will delay shipments of its workstations based around Intel processors and
Windows NT until January 1999.
"After watching the BeOS blow our system out of the water, I would be embarrassed to ship it," SGI chief financial officer Steve
Gomo said in an interview. "I don't know how much we can improve it in just a couple of months, but we have to try something."
Gomo's reactional to the powerful demo was not unique - Be, Inc. CEO Jean-Louis Gassée was swarmed by curious conference attendees after Grove's jaw-dropping performance.
"I only wish my good friend Bill was here," Gassée quipped, referring to Microsoft CEO Bill Gates' absence from the Agenda conference for the first time in its history. [As Be Dope reported yesterday, Gates refused to attend unless Grove dropped the BeOS demo from his keynote]
"We're nowhere near where we really want to be, or
where we should be," Gomo added.
