26 October, 5.29pm pst Be Adopts Open Source
BE DOPE NEWS (BDN) Showing responsiveness to user needs and industry trends, Be, Inc. today announced it would enter the world of Open Source by releasing the BeBox under the General Public License (GPL).
"Two of the most outspoken groups we hear from are those that wish to revive production of the BeBox and those who advocate Open Source," said Be, Inc. CEO Jean-Louis Gassée. "This way, everyone is happy."
Be is currently gathering all the technical aspects of the BeBox into a comprehensive document, which will then be made available on their website, ftp server, magazine advertisements, television infomercials and via smoke signals.
Additionally, Be HQ will host the Open BeBox Lab where interested parties can come to pick up not only the source code to the hardware, but spare parts to BeBoxes found lying around Be offices. Several functioning BeBoxen will be displayed for educational purposes.
"We want to be wide open," added Gassée.
Included in the informational packet will be [former
Director of Hardware engineering at Be, Inc.] Joe Palmer's cell phone number, since, according to current Be engineers, there is stuff about the BeBox "only Joe could make sense of".
Joe Palmer currently runs a lucrative paper airplane folding business in Pensicola, Florida and could not be reached for comment at press time.
